Although there is no legislation that specifically regulates sky lanterns they do have to comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. There are a number of concerns about their safety and impact and in 2014 a code of practice was produced as a result of discussions between the Government and industry.

It was produced by the industry and approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI).

Code of practice

Industry Code of Practice: Sky Lanterns is intended as guidance on good practice for those designing, manufacturing, distributing, retailing or using sky lanterns.

If you are a manufacturer of sky lanterns compliance with the Code of Practice can assist with meeting the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
